The calculations involve several steps and include an intermediate value called the "radiocarbon age", which is the age in "radiocarbon years" of the sample: Measurement of N, the number of 14 C atoms currently in the sample, allows the calculation of t, the age of the sample, using the equation above. The important conclusions drawn from the recent work correlating the latest results are presented in these proceedings; their implications throw much light on natural and cosmological events in the past. To present a comprehensive picture of the latest work, the same two organizations sponsored a Symposium in Monaco on March on Radioactive Dating and Methods of Low-Level Counting. At the meeting were participants from 30 countries, and 57 papers were presented.
